Getting Started

What is The Unspoken Words?

The Unspoken Words is a website where people anonymously share short messages they never got to say — words about grief, regret, love, apology, gratitude, and missed chances. Messages are displayed one at a time on the homepage, with no names, comments, replies, likes, or timestamps attached. The site is free to use and ad-free.

Do I need an account to use the site?

No. There is no sign-up, no login, and no user accounts of any kind. You can read messages and submit your own without creating anything or providing an email address.

Is it really free?

Yes. Reading and submitting messages is completely free, and the site does not display ads. The site is funded entirely by paid name listings, which are separate from message submission and are never required.

Is this a counseling or crisis service?

No. The Unspoken Words is a space for personal expression only. It is not a mental health service, crisis line, counseling resource, or therapy platform, and it does not provide professional advice. If you need immediate support in the U.S., call or text 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, free and confidential, 24/7. Outside the U.S., contact your local emergency services.

Is my message really anonymous?

Yes. Message text is stored on its own with no name, account, or contact information attached to it. Your IP address is not stored in the database and is not linked to your submission. There is no way to trace a message back to the person who wrote it — including by the site itself.

Can I install this as an app?

Yes, but it is not an App Store or Google Play app — searching there will not find it. You get it from the website itself, by saving the site to your phone. Once saved it works like any other app: its own icon on your home screen, opening in its own window.

Most phones offer to do this for you. Open theunspokenwords.com, and if a message pops up asking whether you want to install or add the app, say yes. That is all it takes.

If nothing pops up, you can save it yourself:

  • iPhone or iPad: tap the Share button, then Add to Home Screen.
  • Android: open the browser menu (the three dots) and tap Install or Add to Home screen.
  • Computer (Chrome or Edge): click the Install icon in the address bar, or find Install in the browser menu.

It shows up as Unspoken Words and opens to the homepage. Saving it this way changes nothing about how the site works. There is still no account and no sign-in, and reading and submitting stay anonymous exactly as they are in a browser tab.

Submitting a Message

How do I submit a message?

On the homepage, type your message into the text box under "Say what you never got to say," then click Send it. You will see a short confirmation that reads "Your words are safe here."

How long can my message be?

Up to 280 characters. A live counter under the text box shows how many characters you have left. Messages must be at least 8 characters long.

When will my message appear on the site?

Accepted messages go into the rotation right away. The homepage shows one message at a time, chosen at random, changing roughly every 12 seconds. Because messages are drawn at random from the full collection, there is no guaranteed time at which yours will appear, and it may take many visits before you happen to see it.

I submitted a message but I can't find it. What happened?

Messages are shown in random order and there is no search, archive, or personal history, so there is no way to look up a specific message. It is also possible the message was not accepted. Submissions are automatically declined if they:

  • are shorter than 8 characters,
  • are identical to a message someone has already submitted,
  • contain a phone number, email address, website link, or street address,
  • contain slurs or hate speech,
  • contain threats of violence, or
  • contain specific instructions for suicide or self-harm.

If your message included any of the above, rewrite it without that content and submit it again.

Why was my message with a phone number or website rejected?

Messages are automatically screened for anything that could identify a real person or point somewhere off-site. Phone numbers, email addresses, street addresses, and web links are all removed by that screening. Please resubmit your message without those details.

Can I edit or delete a message after I send it?

Not yourself. Because messages are stored with no account or identifier attached, there is no self-service way to find, edit, or remove one. If you want a message you wrote taken down, email support@theunspokenwords.com with the exact text of the message and it can be located and removed manually.

Can I add my name to my message?

No. Every message is displayed anonymously, and names, contact details, and identifying information about any person are not permitted in message text. If you want your name displayed on the site, that is what the paid listings are for — see the Listings section below.

Is there a limit on how many messages I can submit?

There is no stated limit on the number of messages you can submit. Each message must be at least 8 characters, no more than 280 characters, and different from messages already on the site.

Reading and Reporting

How do messages get chosen?

Each message shown is picked at random from all active messages. Every third slot in the rotation displays a short note about the site's paid listings instead of a message.

I saw a message that shouldn't be there. What do I do?

Click report this message directly underneath it. You will see "Thanks for letting us know." The first report immediately pulls that message out of the rotation while it is reviewed. If a message receives three reports, it is permanently removed. Every report also sends an alert to the site owner for review.

Can a reported message come back?

Yes. A message pulled from rotation after a report can be restored by the site owner after review. A message that has been permanently deactivated stays off the site.

Are the messages on the site real?

Messages are anonymous and unverified. The site does not verify the authorship, truth, intent, or origin of anything it displays. As the Terms of Service state, a message may be personal, fictional, symbolic, AI-assisted, AI-generated, or copied.

The collection includes both messages submitted by visitors and messages written for the site. They are displayed the same way, there is no way to tell them apart, and the site does not claim that any particular message is a true account of a real event.

What does the number at the top of the page mean?

It is a running tally the site keeps of the messages it has gathered. It is not a live visitor count, and it is not a count of how many messages are currently in rotation.

Listings and Payment

What are the paid listings?

Paid listings are text-only name placements displayed on the site. They are commercial listing space, not donations, tips, or charitable contributions, and they are not connected to any individual message writer.

There are two kinds. Annual listings appear in the three columns on the homepage and renew each year. Permanent listings are a single payment and stay for the lifetime of the site.

Annual listings — renew automatically each year until cancelled:

ListingPriceWhat appears
Named Listing$12 / yearThe name you provide, plus an optional location
In Memory Of$24 / yearThe name you provide, plus an optional lifespan
Business Listing$99 / yearThe business name you provide, plus an optional location and an optional contact detail

Permanent listings — one payment, never expire, limited in number:

ListingPriceWhat appears
Permanent Individual$300The name you give at checkout
Permanent In Memory$500"In Memory of" the name you provide
Permanent Business$1,000The business name you give at checkout, plus a contact detail

Permanent listings are limited, and the Sponsors page shows how many of each remain.

How do I buy a listing?

For an annual listing, click the button under the column you want on the homepage — "Add your name, $12/yr", "Honor someone here, $24/yr", or "List your business, $99/yr". Every listing, annual and permanent, can also be purchased from the Sponsors page, linked in the footer of every page.

Either way, a secure Stripe checkout page opens in a new tab. Fill in the name you want displayed and any optional details, then complete payment. All payment handling is done by Stripe; the site never sees or stores your card details.

What do I need to enter at checkout?

A name to display is always required. If it is left blank, the listing cannot be created, so please check that field before paying.

The rest depends on the listing: a location is optional for Named and Business listings, a lifespan is optional for In Memory Of listings, and Business listings can include a contact detail.

How soon does my listing appear?

Your listing is created as soon as Stripe confirms the payment. Listing data is cached for up to one minute, so if it is not visible immediately, wait a moment and refresh. If it still has not appeared, email support@theunspokenwords.com with the name you entered and the email address used at checkout.

How long does a listing last?

An annual listing runs for twelve months from the day you buy it, and renews each year until you cancel. Buying in November gives you a full twelve months, not the remainder of the calendar year.

A permanent listing does not expire. It stays for as long as the site operates and never requires a renewal payment.

Does my listing renew automatically?

Annual listings do. They are yearly subscriptions, so unless you cancel, the card used at checkout is charged again each year and the listing continues without interruption.

Permanent listings never renew, because they are a single payment.

To stop an annual listing renewing, email support@theunspokenwords.com from the address used at checkout.

Can I change the name or details on my listing?

There is no self-service way to edit a listing after purchase. Email support@theunspokenwords.com from the address used at checkout with the change you need, and it will be updated by hand.

How do I cancel a listing or get a refund?

Email support@theunspokenwords.com from the address used at checkout. Cancelling stops future renewals, and your listing stays up through the end of the period you have already paid for rather than disappearing immediately.

Amounts already paid are not refunded. If you want a listing taken down early, that can be done, but it does not produce a refund.

Is there a free trial?

No. There is no trial period and no introductory pricing. The site itself is free to use, and listings are paid from the moment of purchase.

Do I get emails after buying a listing?

The email address used at checkout is added to the site's mailing list so listing holders can be contacted about their listing. Every email includes an unsubscribe link.

What is the Sponsors page?

It lists everyone with an active listing, and it is where all six listing types can be purchased. It is linked from the footer of every page. Permanent listings appear in their own section, annual listings in another, and the page shows how many permanent slots remain in each category.

Privacy and Data

What data does the site collect?

Message text is stored on its own, with no name, email address, account, or IP address attached to it.

Buying a listing is the only part of the site that involves your personal information. Stripe handles the payment and holds the payment record. The site stores the name and any details you chose to display, your email address, and Stripe's customer and purchase identifiers so your purchase can be recognised and managed.

The site also uses Google Analytics to measure traffic.

Does the site use cookies or analytics?

Yes. Google Analytics is used to understand how many people visit and which pages they read. It sets cookies in your browser and receives your IP address, approximate location, device, and browser as part of that measurement. It is used for traffic measurement only, and it is never connected to the messages you submit — submissions carry no identifier that could be linked to a visit.

You can block it with any browser setting or extension that blocks analytics, or with Google's own opt-out add-on. Blocking it does not affect anything on the site.

Which outside companies receive my data?

Six services are involved, each with its own privacy policy:

  • Cloudflare — hosts the site, routes traffic, and stores the database
  • Stripe — processes payments and holds the payment records
  • Google Analytics — measures site traffic
  • Google Fonts — serves the typefaces on every page, and receives your IP address when your browser requests them
  • MailerLite — holds the mailing list for people who bought a listing
  • Resend — delivers the alert emails sent to the site owner when a message is reported
Do you store my IP address?

Not in the site's own database, and never against a message. Your IP address does pass through Cloudflare as part of ordinary web routing, and Google Analytics and Google Fonts receive it as described above.

Can I have my data deleted?

There is no self-service deletion tool, because there are no accounts. Email support@theunspokenwords.com describing what you want removed. Removal requests are tracked and you will get a reply confirming what was done.

For a message, include its exact wording — that is the only way to find it. For a listing, write from the address used at checkout. To leave the mailing list, use the unsubscribe link in any email or simply ask.

Do you sell my data?

No. The site does not sell user data or share it with advertisers, and it does not run ads or advertising trackers.

Is there an age requirement?

The site is not intended for anyone under the age of 13.

Troubleshooting

The message area says "Some words take a lifetime to find."

That message appears when the site cannot load a message at that moment. Refresh the page. If it keeps happening, email support@theunspokenwords.com.

The counter at the top shows "..." and never loads.

The counter could not be retrieved. Refresh the page. If the rest of the site is working, this does not affect your ability to read or submit messages.

A listing column says "Get Listed" instead of showing names.

That column has no active listings yet. It will show names once listings are purchased in that category, and the "Get Listed" text is the purchase link for it.

The Send button did nothing.

An empty text box will not submit. Enter at least 8 characters and try again. If the button still does not respond, refresh the page and retry.

My message shows the confirmation but never appears anywhere.

The confirmation appears for every submission. If your message contained content the site does not accept — contact details, links, slurs, threats, or self-harm instructions — was under 8 characters, or duplicated an existing message, it was not added. Rewrite and resubmit. See "I submitted a message but I can't find it" above.
